Up on the Roof: Downtown San Diego Rooftop Venues

San Diego may likely has more rooftop drinking and eating venues than any American city. Of course, it helps that San Diego’s climate is the best in the U.S. Locals should be taking advantage of the weather (and the sunshine tax that San Diegans pay) by enjoying drinks and dining under the stars.   And the months of July-October are the perfect time to partake of these outdoor venues:

RUSTIC ROOT

This is a prime people-watching on the second floor of this Gaslamp restaurant.  It’s luxuriously appointed with couches and tables as well as topiaries.  Totally fun to preside over the crazed 5th Avenue Gaslamp scene on weekend evenings.  But be prepared for a wait; this place fills up quickly and the guests aren’t rushed out.   We had some excellent food and wine, thanks to the ground floor restaurant which specializes in local American food.  Not necessarily a scenic view, but think New Orleans’ French Quarter and you’ll get the vibe.

LEVEL 9 at HOTEL INDIGO

Located at Hotel Indigo, which is known for being a dog friendly hotel. Great place to pregame or listen to Petco Park concerts.   The venue is relatively small and has a limited downtown view, but their location next to Petco Park makes this place come alive during the baseball season.   And if you want to listen to the entertainment at Petco Park, Level 9 is an unparalleled concert voyeur spot.   Their food and drinks are a little pricey.   We weren’t blown away by the ceviche and drinks that we ordered but, hey, its location is worth it!

THE NOLEN

The Nolen features both a patio and a rooftop, because why not? Its beautiful setting — which features a communal fire pit — includes an immersive cocktail menu. Along with impressive views of the downtown San Diego skyline, this 14-floor rooftop bar and lounge foodery is consistently ranked among the hottest bars in San Diego.

THE ROOFTOP by STK At ANDAZ

The Andaz Hotel is somewhat unique in that it offers some quality poolside lounging in addition to the usual fare. It has a sweeping view of downtown and offers a full array of nibbles, wines and cocktails. Be sure to check out their series of pool parties happening all summer, along with a live DJ on weekend evenings after 9pm.
